Sylvia has over a dozen years of experience in graphic design and web design. Born and raised in Rochester NY, she fell in love with graphic design when she began coediting her homeschool association’s newsletter with her mother. She began studying graphic design and visual communications at Monroe Community College while still in highschool, later moving on to the University of Waterloo for Knowledge Integration, which focuses on design thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration as means to solving complex problems. As part of that program, she worked with other students to design and build two museum exhibits: one for the third-year “KI-X” (Knowledge Integration Exhibition) required of all students, and a second in collaboration with the Ontario Science Centre (see Game Changer for more information).
Sylvia is a passionate cyclist and active transit advocate, and enjoys cooking, baking, gardening, and spending time with her husband, family, and friends. Find Sylvia on twitter @SylviaDHook.
Everyone has a message to share. Good design starts with your message, and works to communicate it clearly. Elucidation Design creates affordable custom design solutions for small businesses and individuals, to help share your message.
Founded in 2011 by Sylvia Hook, Elucidation Design is a one-woman design firm in Kitchener-Waterloo, ON. Sylvia chose “Elucidation Design” for two reasons: 1) “Elucidate” means “make clear” or “explain”, and good design should almost disappear while making the content clear, and 2) she just really likes the word “elucidation”.
